Lake Erie Anchoring Locations & Tips

Long Point Bay & Bluff Bar (Ontario)
Located in Norfolk County, this spot naturally shields boats from western and northwestern winds in both the inner and outer bay sections. However, the nearby Bluff Bar is a treacherous, mile-long sandbar that moves constantly—it’s best to circle its western tip rather than cutting across it. Conditions can change rapidly; watch depths and wave action closely if the wind direction shifts.

Presque Isle & Marina Lake (Erie, Pennsylvania)
Situated in Presque Isle State Park on the southern shore, this offers a 10-square-mile natural harbor. Marina Cove is particularly secluded and deeply sheltered. You’ll find roughly 15 feet of water with straightforward anchoring conditions.

East Harbor (Ohio)
On the southern side of Lake Erie, Ohio waters are 7–11 feet deep. This area is heavily used by local fishermen around the clock during summer months, so make sure your anchor light is visible at all times.

Point Abino Area (Ontario)
Near Fort Erie on the northern shore, this spot works well for overnight stops during calm or southerly weather. Be aware that seas can become rough and bounce-heavy if the wind turns north.

Put-in-Bay & South Bass Island (Ohio)
Situated in the western end of the lake, this area allows for anchoring close to the Perry Monument. However, the bottom doesn’t provide consistent grip, and many boaters prefer using mooring balls rather than risking sudden wind changes and direct exposure to open lake conditions.

Sandusky Bay (Ohio)
This location delivers good natural protection if you’re paying attention to wind direction. The main concern is shallow areas—always consult your charts before dropping anchor and be cautious of hiddensandbars.

Put-in-Bay & South Bass Island (Ohio)
Sailors typically anchor in the open water right before the Perry Monument, though be aware that the seabed is notoriously rocky with significant wave energy from passing vessels. These conditions make
mooring balls a much safer choice for most cruisers.

Kelleys Island (Ohio)
This area draws large numbers of boaters to the North Shore Cove. The bottom is primarily sand, providing good holding, and it has become a popular destination for day visitors.

Pelee Island (Ontario)
Cruisers have two main options: the South End or the North Shore near Scudder’s. Because the island offers limited shelter from winds on either side, you’ll need to choose which end works best for the current wind direction and switch accordingly if conditions change.

Key Anchoring Considerations

Wind Awareness
Lake Erie’s shallow depths make it particularly vulnerable to sudden wave spikes and seiches. A calm anchorage during a southern wind can become dangerous overnight if conditions flip to the north.

Bring Quality Gear
The lake bottom often has poor holding—packed sand over limestone or thick zebra mussel beds. Most experienced sailors carry large roll-bar style anchors (like Rocna) with plenty of chain rode for security.

Consider Harbors Over Open Anchorages
Many boaters along the Canadian and American northern shores prefer seeking shelter in municipal harbors or river-mouth ports (like Kettle Creek in Port Stanley or Port Burwell) rather than trying to ride out a storm in an open-lake anchorage.
